Of all the nations on earth we have the largest number of people in prison and the largest percentage of our population in prison. This is not the mark of a genuinely free society.
The clear biases within our system about people of color and the poor should also be troubling to any fair-minded American. Our justice system has come to the point that rights exist essentially in proportion to how much money a person has along with consideration for their skin color. The biases exist from the police end of the system through to the prison side of the system.
I note that most police cannot be categorized as operating within these biases but that there is a system-wide problem that allows a few police to do so. We need external oversites to the components of our justice system to bring it to a condition that all Americans can trust. I call for an end to incarceration for purely autonomous acts that do not harm other people.
I also call for an end to private, for-profit prisons. It is difficult to imagine a more certain formula for the corruption of law enforcement. Incentives matter.
